Discovering the High Energy Universe

  • Description
  • Reviews (0)

What you will learn?

  • Visible & Infrared Imaging Systems
  • Astrophysical Objects that are observed via High Energy Emissions such as X-rays and Gama rays
  • Basics of the Instrumentation of X and Gamma Ray Telescopes
  • Data Cleaning and Spectral Analysis with Chandra X-Ray Observatory

DESCRIPTION

This course brings together all the relevant information required for an observational high energy astrophysicist. We will start with an introduction where we will go into physics subjects which are frequently used in high energy astrophysics such as the electromagnetic spectrum, photoelectric effect, and shock waves. Afterwards, we will look into some very “famous” types of objects that are most active in High Energies such as X-rays and Gamma rays. And then, we will be discovering the space telescopes that are being used today. We will also briefly talk about the engineering and the instrumentation of these sources. Finally, I will show you the very basics of spectral analysis by using public archival data of Chandra X-ray Observatory.

Özgür Can Özüdoğru

My name is Özgür Can Özüdoğru, but you can call me Oz if you’re not familiar with Turkish and my name is too hard for you to pronounce :) I graduated from the physics department of Middle East Technical University in 2019 and am doing my Master’s in Astrophysics at METU. My research mostly focuses on the spectral and timing analysis of the accretion disks of Neutron Stars and Black Holes. I use X-Ray data from space telescopes such as Chandra, Swift and NICER to investigate the physical phenomenon happening around those objects. I am also very interested in music, amateur astronomy, astrophotography, arts, cooking, and history and philosophy. I can talk about rock music of the 70s, Ancient Greek philosophers, or 19th Century Impressionism for hours. I have also worked as a columnist at various Turkish popular science magazines and took part in numerous outreach events together with the METU Amateur Astronomy Society.
